Awareness and Prevention of Prescription Drug Abuse,
Misuse and Diversion
The mission of RxControl is to provide families, patients, and healthcare providers with educational information, tools and resources that can be used to minimize prescription drug abuse, misuse and diversion in homes and in the healthcare environment.
Prescription drug abuse, misuse, addiction, and diversion have reached epidemic proportions in the United States. An alarming number of teens and adults are using pain medications for nonmedical purposes. The most common sources of prescription medications that are abused or misused by teens and adults come from “friends and family”. Fraudulent schemes to obtain prescription drugs from healthcare practitioners continue to increase often creating an environment of “prescriber fear to prescribe” which significantly impacts legitimate patients. Law enforcement agencies continue to report an increasing incidence of drug diversion characterized by prescription drugs thefts, break-ins /robberies and “doctor shopping.”
The mission of RxControl encompasses several key areas:
Educating the community about safe medication practices including storage and disposal of prescription and over-the-counter medications.
Educating the community about the inherent dangers of sharing prescription medications.
- Providing safe medication guidelines to healthcare professionals that will help limit inappropriate prescription drug activities while optimizing treatments for patients with legitimate medical purposes.
